Family, Childhood, and Education

He is the son of a Theodore S., a professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College and Helen Anne Tapper, a retired psychiatric nurse at Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He has a brother, Aaron J. Hahn Tapper. His parents divorced when he was young, and he spent his childhood moving between the homes of both his parents in Philadelphia.

He attended ‘Dartmouth College,’ where he studied history and visual studies, graduating “magna cum laude” in 1991. He was a ‘Phi Beta Kappa’ honoree.
Tapper enrolled at the ‘University of Southern California’ to study films but soon found out that this was not his cup of tea. He quit the program after one semester.

Career

He started his career in 1992 when he became a campaign press secretary for Margolis Mezvinsky, who was a candidate for the democratic congressional party. He also worked for Powell Tate, which was a public relations firm based in Washington DC. The firm was run by Jody Powell, who was a Democrat and Sheila Tate, who held different political views of a Republican. Jake again worked for Handgun Control, inclusive for a short time in 1997. This institution is today known as Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

At the beginning of his career, Tapper wrote several articles as a freelancer before starting his full-time journalism career in 1998. He wrote for Washington city paper for two years with a rank of Senior Writer. Still, in the Washington City Paper, Tapper worked for Salon.com as the Washington City Correspondent. He reported about Enron and was an early criticizer of the Bush administration’s claim regarding Iraq’s access to weapons of mass destruction.

In 2002 Tapper hosted CNN news talk show, Take Five as a Columnist for a Talk Magazine. He has also written for the different magazines in New York and Los Angeles. Among many other publications, Jake Tapper has written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The Weekly Standard, and Los Angeles Times.
