Next Album Will Be Available By Drinkiks Record Label
De Lorenzo Whitaker (aka Moneybagg Yo) is an American rap musician from Memphis, Tennessee. He is popularly known by his stage name, Moneybag Yo. He is also an executive officer of the company Ear Sam and is involved in its distribution as well as its promotion. In 2021, he was the face of a lawsuit against Reebok, which claimed that he copied the design of Reebok’s basketball shoe. After being sued, he stated that he would stop making Moneybag Yo clothing if the company offered to settle the lawsuit out of court. He was eventually hit with a second lawsuit for copyright infringement.
On November 4, it was announced that Moneybag Yo would be making a cameo appearance on the Instagram page of a major record label. The image shows a man wearing a Moneybag Yo tee, holding a piece of cash. The caption underneath reads “So you can get the word out about our brand new tape….we hit the courts with a full suit.” This Instagram posting is the second instance that a major record label has used a rapper as a test market for a new product. This particular post shared by big bagg (a reference to Yeezy, Westside legend Big Daddy Kane) showed up on the instagrams of numerous famous rappers.
According to attorney Michael Webster of the law firm Dioscore, Inc., the use of copyrighted content without authorization is a violation of the copyrights laws in most states including: United States Copyright Law, 15 USC Sect 793(b). The use of a copyrighted image for commercial purposes constitutes unfair competition to an existing or previously established business entity. For example, a clothing line that markets itself as selling only custom designed clothes for men would be subject to fair trade regulations under the law. In the case of a rap artist, this would mean that the record label would have to pay the rapper a fee based upon the revenue generated from the sale of any merchandise containing his images. In a related instance, if the entertainer had recorded an album that contained music that he wrote and did not license the master recording, he would still be able to use the master recordings even though he would not be charging the record labels any money.
When a celebrity uses an image for commercial purposes, he is being used as a model. In this instance, Moneybags Yo Tee was used by the record label in order to market the new tape it was releasing. Therefore, when it was used in an Instagram posting, the individual who posted the image could potentially become the new face of the company. In the Instagram posting, the person who appears to be the singer is wearing a suit, and the text says “I’m Moneybags, yo’m fired…ready to make my move?” This may seem like a very corny line, but it is actually pretty funny. If this were a real advertisement for the product, then they would have to be very clever to make this work.
In an internet market that is so overcrowded, the opportunity to advertise a product in such a unique way has never been greater. If someone owns the rights to a trademark, he can leverage his or her popularity to sell a product in an incredibly cost effective manner. It is a known fact that many celebrities make millions of dollars each year from selling merchandises that they themselves created, but if someone has an incredibly popular Instagram account and regularly posts videos of himself or herself performing, then they can potentially earn millions more from selling a physical product than they would from simply signing to a record label. The opportunity to make moneybags yo Tee is something that a lot of individuals have found success with.
The next mixtape titled, “dopey celebrity rappers disappear” will be released by DJ Drama. He is currently signed to majors including Cash Money, Young Money, Metro Boomin, and Def Jam. Many people have been clamoring for a new major label release, but for now, this is the only one that we have confirmed as coming our way, and that is a good thing. Hopefully the opportunity to make a profit from this opportunity will present itself soon.
